“It is true that we are called to create a better world. But we are first of all called to a more immediate and exalted task: that of creating our own lives.”

Thomas Merton

Hi! My name is Ruby Orcutt, Nationally Certified Counselor, Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor, and certified chemical dependency counselor. I am the owner of Soul Praxis therapy.

I believe that therapy/counseling can help you in countless ways. It can boost your confidence, rejuvenate your health, give you direction, increase your focus, strengthen your emotional ties, help you move past traumatic events, and eventually live a better well-rounded life. Counseling can help you better understand your situation and gain clarity in what is required from here on. It can help turn your weaknesses into strengths and help you reframe setbacks into learning experiences, so to stop fearing failure and create/take up every opportunity offered.

Therapy is a journey of mutual collaboration with ample space for hope in the healing process. Every person has resiliency and wisdom. Every person has a special skills set and action set that have worked in some degrees to get you to this point in life. In therapy we can learn to listen the messages in our bodies, to develop understanding of our thought patterns, and to identify self-sabotaging behaviors. It is possible to build a strong set of new and healthy thoughts, emotions and practices. There is room for mistakes/learning opportunities, refocusing, and connecting your parts in order to become  a whole, connected, and fulfilled being. You already have it within you. I will integrate different approaches, practices, techniques and skills and will tailor them to your own specific needs, style, and personality. Our goals in sessions are aimed to be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time bounded. Schedule a friendly call to find out if I am the right fit for you!

I believe everyone has resiliency and that therapy is only effective when it is engaging and supportive. I tailor sessions thoughtfully and intentionally to address your concerns and uncertainties. I lean towards a strengths based, solution focused, positive psychology based, highly collaborative, and integrative approach enhancing skills you already use.

I believe in my client's potential to break through the obstacles that seem to be holding them back in life. Life's too short to be unhappy, unsure, or unfulfilled.

My purpose is to help people live a better life and my joy is in witnessing people succeed and living life to the fullest.

Therapists have robust skills, talents, and passions. We are a helping hand, a supportive force, and we provide a holding space. There are a lot of us, so why me?

Accessible. With telehealth therapy, barriers are removed. There is no need for travel, for gas, for childcare or for ADA accessibility in buildings.

Relatable. I take great pride in being approachable, real, and honest. I have heard feedback that this has helped lessen the anxiety associated with initiating the therapeutic process.

Truth worthiness.  I am committed to providing honest and direct therapeutic relationship, both in terms of language and resources used in sessions. I also strive to be open about my thought processes in therapy as therapy should be engaging, not a mystery.

Diversity. I have diverse experience with a wide range of clientele; This includes working for two years with people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender,  and genderqueer. Also working with people with HIV diagnosis. Additionally, I have worked closely with immigrants, older adults, and those in a caregiving role. Finally, I provide therapy in English and Spanish.

Resourceful. I have experience in treating depression, generalized anxiety, performance anxiety, creative blocks, communication/relationship issues, life transitions, work/life balance, women's issues, and habit building. I also specialize in a variety of counseling modalities, including positive psychology, Solution Focused Therapy, mindfulness, strength based interventions, life style interventions, somatic interventions, creativity, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy which I integrate with EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and Natural Processing (for Somatic EMDR) to further improve results.

Ownership. I encourage all my clients to truly listen and own their feelings: they are there for a reason, they are messengers, and they provide the clues for transformation. I encourage myself to truly listen and be open about my thought processes in therapy so to connect in more effective ways.

Having worked in different settings have helped shape how I view therapy, and how I relate with the world. My experience working in the mental health care and social services industry especially Non Profit Organizations, had made my knowledge and style evolve to assist people in getting the best of them, and getting through difficult times. Being skilled in Positive Psychology, Mindfulness,  EMDR Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy (SFT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), among other Evidence-Based Clinical Interventions, I’m rather equipped to deal with issues you might be facing. Having graduated from Medaille College in 2014, I have a degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling approved by CACREP. I understand how hard it can be to move past a distressing event or work up the nerve to follow your dreams. I have a flair for connecting with my clients on a deep and intimate level. I can help you work through the vortex of fear and procrastination and I can help you find and grow the empowerment you need to start working down the bucket list.

I was born Colombian, and my native language is Spanish. I currently live in the Buffalo area. My schooling in psychotherapy was all in English.

My husband and I are passionate about doing things in life. After our current "day jobs", we encounter great pleasure and fulfillment on  house flipping as a side hustle. That's why nails might never be in classic French, and you will find paint traces here and there!

I used to be a fine arts teacher in college in my country of origin. Now that I am not teaching, per se, I paint and create art. I love to "play" with construction, sewing, and designing tools. Reading is another pleasure which I bask on. With the technology advances, I am an audiobook junkie.

Being active is an important part of a good life, in my opinion. I enjoy bike riding, swimming, traveling, and exercising at home, specially in winter time.  Taking aside space for meditation and relaxation, silence, or a little bit of qi gong also make part of daily practices.

I have been rewarded with amazing friends wherever I have had the opportunity to move. My friends in different parts of the world are the family that my higher intelligence's plan put in my way, and I exercise great pride for having them.

I firmly believe that happiness exist, not as an absolute, but as an attitude, and a way of life. Life may give us pain, but is up to us to navigate the challenges, re-emerging, standing tall and resilient. We can create moments of joy, and it is up to us to create that empowerment.
